2018 UK-JAPAN CAMBRIDGE YOUNG SCIENTIST WORKSHOP

University of Cambridge 22-28 July

We are delighted to invite a teacher and 3 students from your school/academy/college

to apply to participate in the 2018 UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop hosted at

Cambridge University.

Students must be aged 16 or over at the time of the Workshop and should be selected

by your school as those who would gain most from the experience both in terms of their

academic ability and in their interest in the international dimension. We are keen to

include as many able students from disadvantaged communities as resources allow.

Through our UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshops, we enable British and

Japanese students to discover, by living and working together with cutting edge

scientists and engineers, a new vision of the world they are entering, of the

challenges and opportunities science and engineering are opening to them, and

of their own futures as global citizens. We have run 21 of these Workshops since

2001 and they have had immense impact on the 1000+ students involved.

Cambridge University ; We have run UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshops with

Cambridge scientists and engineers each year since 2010, and once again we will be

living in Murray Edwards College and the Kaetsu Centre (on the Murray Edwards

campus), with projects taking place across the university.

Costs in Cambridge ; We ask for a contribution of £650 per participant (students and

teacher from your school) to cover everything in Cambridge including accommodation

meals in Murray Edwards and the final Workshop Dinner in Christ’s College (but not

snack lunches which are taken with the research groups; college breakfasts and dinners

are very substantial).

Our funds this year will be very limited but from past experience we know that it is

often very possible for schools and indeed the students themselves to raise

significant funds for such a worthy cause from local sources and on line if they

start early. We are committed to including as many able students from

disadvantaged backgrounds as our resources allow. If you think you might need

help, please send us specific details.
