Primary Science Days

Primary Science Days
Working with partners, we have developed a very effective structure for Primary Science Days. Each Primary Science Day focuses on a particular area of science… these have included medicine, engineering, chemistry, perfumery, etc. Working with partners, we have developed a very effective structure for Primary Science Days. To say I was amazed at the Year 5 children’s response to the day is an understatement. Many of the Year 5 boys can be unenthusiastic and unresponsive to ‘learning’ and unable or unwilling to verbalise their thoughts and ideas. All children spoke with great enthusiasm citing many aspects that they found interesting. It was wonderful to see how animated they were and the number of facts they remembered. These they related to the Year 2 children who in turn were captivated by the Year 5’s enthusiasm and the interesting facts they told them.
Comments of a teacher who did not attend a medicine primary science day on the response of children on returning to school; from Evaluation Report.
Who? 60 primary school students from two or more Bristol LEA primary schools, with their teachers.

What? Three activities in each Primary Science Day:

Pupils questioning the scientists as professionals about their lives and motivations.
Pupils engaging in hands on activity with the scientists.
Pupils communicating their own classroom science investigations to each other.
Partners? We are very grateful for the support of scientist teams who give their time gratis. For example one Medicine Primary Science day was supported by a team of four medical researchers, two General Practitioners, a medical student and a surgeon.

Primary Science Days have been supported by the Science Enhancement Programme, Gatsby Technical Education Projects, by the University of Bristol Widening Participation Programme and by Clifton College, Bristol, who have hosted the events.
